Specialist Mental Health Practitioner and Founder of Go Again
I’m a Mental Health Practitioner working for the NHS alongside my more recent role as Director of Go Again.
I started working in mental health services 17 years ago. This was shortly after a bereavement. Working in mental health definitely helped me to build strategies to manage my own mental health and to support others going through difficulties in their lives.
Whilst working in mental health services I have supported many people who had difficult experiences within the sport industry and have experienced long-term mental health difficulties. Many people who I have supported have significantly struggled after being released from clubs and academies.
My thought has always been that clubs and academies at all levels may benefit from having mental health nurses and other mental health professionals with differing skillsets working alongside their clubs and academies.
After spending the last four years working with several clubs at different levels of the game it is clear that mental health is something that clubs and players take very seriously and would like more support for their staff and players in the future.
I have set up Go Again in order for clubs at all levels of the game and released players to have an easy, fast and confidential route to Mental Health Professionals.
Another observation whilst working in NHS Mental Health Services was the impact of sport projects on people’s recovery. After supporting a colleague to set up a weekly project called Recovery Through Sport which had significant results for people’s recovery I wanted to see if Go Again Charity could run similar projects so more people can access this type of group to benefit their mental health.
